The original vision for the development of the Jim Bertram Lake System
(formerly the Canyon Lake System) dates back more than thirty years ago.
The Lake project had its beginning in 1966 when the Yellowhouse Canyon
began to be converted from a dumping ground into a major regional park
in the the southern United States. Now recognized as one of the largest
regional parks in the nation, the 2,000 acres linear system includes
five of the originally planned lakes, many historic parks, and prominent
cultural landmarks along the six-mile corridor. The Jim Bertram Lake
System represents one of the largest reclaimed water systems in the
country today and exemplifies a creative use of effluent water to supply
water for the series of lakes within the canyon.
