Vehicles and Driving in City Parks
The City of Lubbock wants to remind citizens that driving or parking vehicles on the grass or landscaping located in a City park or on City property is against City ordinance. Driving on park property results in damage to both turf and irrigation sprinkler systems and can result in costly repairs. Citizens should hand carry items from the street or parking lot to the interior of a park. This is also true for local businesses that offer bounce houses, climbing walls, tents, and other large items for party rentals or other activities in our City parks. In addition, citizens should not park on the grass surrounding soccer fields and softball, baseball and little league ballfields. The City of Lubbock Police will be stepping up enforcement by ticketing anyone parking or driving on City parkland.
It is unlawful to drive any motor vehicle on the parks as stated in Chapter 16 of the City of Lubbock Code of Ordinances, Section 16-131. The ordinance reads as follows:
No person shall drive any motor vehicle across, upon or through any grassed or landscaped area or area served by underground irrigation sprinklers, when said areas are located on any public property owned or maintained by the City, and it shall be unlawful for any person, having registered in his name such vehicle or owning or operating or having in charge or under his control such vehicle, to allow, permit or suffer such vehicle to be driven across, upon or through any grassed or landscaped area or area served by underground irrigation sprinklers, when said areas are located on any public property owned or maintained by the City. This section does not apply to City vehicles, emergency vehicles or public utility service vehicles.
